Purchased by me

Jet boosters, an ‘Out of Time’ plate, and both Marty and Doc in movie-accurate outfits. You can build it in car mode or with the wheels down like the flying scene. For a Back to the Future fan, this one’s a lot of fun.

The verdict

Buy it if

you’re a Back to the Future fan or a DeLorean fan who wants a detailed minifig-scale build.

What’s good

  • Loads of movie detail: jet boosters on the back, nice stickers, and the ‘Out of Time’ license plate.
  • Comes with both Marty McFly and Doc Brown minifigs, and they look really movie accurate.
  • Minifig scale, so the top comes off and you can seat both figures inside and ‘drive’ it.
  • Two build modes: leave it in car mode, or build it with the wheels pointing down like the flying scene.

The catch

  • The wrench it comes with has no real storage spot, so you just kind of toss it in the car.
  • The 77256 is a small Speed Champions set, so don’t expect a big, complex build.

What it is

The Lego Speed Champions Back to the Future DeLorean, a minifig-scale set with a lot of movie detail. The 77256 is got jet boosters on the back, nice stickers, and the ‘Out of Time’ license plate, and the bottom is pretty solid too. The top comes off so you can seat the two included minifigs inside.

What I found building it

The detail is what carries it. The jet boosters, the stickers, and that license plate all land, and both minifigs look really movie accurate. Marty’s vest in particular looks so cool, and you can set both him and Doc inside and drive it around.

The 77256 comes with a wrench, but there’s no real spot to keep it, so you just kind of throw it in the car if you want to store it. Small thing. You can also build it two ways: leave it in car mode, or build it with the wheels pointing down like the jet-boosted flying scene from the movie.

Who I’d tell to buy it

I really like this one for any Back to the Future fan or anyone who loves DeLoreans. If you want something bigger, the larger Lego Icons DeLorean is the step up, but for a detailed minifig-scale build with both characters, this one nails it. It kind of comes down to whether you want the small fun version or the big display piece.

How it did in testing

This is a quick hands-on, not a lab test. Nothing below is a score. The 77256 is just what stood out building it and setting the minifigs in.

The detail is the story here. The little movie touches are everywhere, and both figures look great.

Living with it

This one packs a lot of movie detail into a small Speed Champions set. Both minifigs look great, the two build modes are a nice touch, and the stickers and plate really sell the look.

The only nitpick is the wrench having no home, so it just floats in the car. Minor. If you like Back to the Future or DeLoreans, I think you’ll have fun with this one.
