Purchased by me

Movie-accurate stickers, the number 95, that Lightning McQueen smile, and an opening hood that makes him look like he’s talking. There’s no minifig cockpit here, because this is Lightning himself. To me it’s a fun one at any age.

Lego Speed Champions Lightning McQueen

The verdict

Buy it if

you or your kid love Disney Cars and want a movie-accurate Lightning McQueen build.

What’s good

  • Very movie accurate, with great stickers and decals and the number 95 on top.
  • The hood opens a little, which is fun for making him look like he’s talking.
  • Nice details throughout: the Lightning McQueen smile up front, Rusty’s bumper, and detail on the bottom.
  • Lightyear tires and the fun red color make it look cool and enjoyable to roll around.

The catch

  • No opening doors or cockpit, because this is Lightning McQueen and not a car for a minifig to drive.
  • The Speed is about the same small size as the other Speed Champions sets, so it’s not a big build.

What it is

So this is the Lego Speed Champions Lightning McQueen, a movie-accurate build of the Disney Cars star. It’s about the same size as the other Speed Champions sets, with great stickers and decals, the number 95 on top, the classic smile up front, and Rusty’s bumper. There’s good detail on the bottom too.

What I found using it

For me the accuracy is what makes it. All the details that read as Lightning are here, and the hood opens a little so you can make him look like he’s talking, which is a fun touch. The Lightyear tires and the red color make it look cool and fun to roll around.

Because this is Lightning McQueen and not a normal car, there’s no opening doors or cockpit for a minifig to drive. That’s the one thing that sets it apart from the other Speed Champions cars, and honestly it fits the character.

Who I’d tell to buy it

This one’s for any Disney Cars fan, at any age. If you loved the movies, it’s an easy pick. If you specifically want a Speed Champions car with opening doors and a minifig driver, one of the other sets will suit you better.

How it did in testing

This is a quick hands-on, not a lab test. Nothing below is a score. The Speed is just what stood out to me building it and rolling it around.

The movie accuracy is the whole point here, and they nailed the details that make him look like Lightning.

Living with it

So this is just a great set for any Disney Cars fan, no matter your age. The red color is fun, the details are movie accurate, and the opening hood adds a bit of play.

The Speed is not built for a minifig to drive, so there’s no cockpit or opening doors. That fits, though, because he’s Lightning. If you’ve loved Cars, I think this set is for you.
